MycenaeA civilization grew up in southern and central Greece made up of several heavily fortified cities. This civilization flourished between 1300-1000 BC. We call it the Mycenaean civlization after Mycenae -- the city of the legendary king Agamemnon. The Mycenaeans came from Asia and had moved into Greece from the north. The Mycenaeans were great warriors and built heavily fortified cities with huge stone walls -- over 10 feet thick! The fortifications contained a palace with sleeping quarters for officials and soldiers as well as storerooms. The palace functioned as the military and administrative center for the area. It also provided protection for the people from surrounding villages. They could run into the fortress for protection if they were under attack. |
