The guide dog partnership

Through a unique partnership, Guide Dogs enable their owners to act with greater speed and confidence and give them the ability to avoid obstacles.

 

They give them increased safety in traffic, greater independence through not having to rely on others, and companionship.

Up to now, the dogs have been taught by experienced dog trainers. Now they must learn to take commands from their new blind partner, and their partner must learn to work with the dog.

When a blind person takes on a guide dog, they have training, and start working with their dog while the dog trainer watches and helps them.

It is quite difficult to learn to trust the dog to make decisions like when it is safe to cross a road without being hit by a car. But if they did not have a guide dog to let them know when it is safe, they would have to wait for a person walking by to tell them.

Meeting your new guide dog for the first time is a very emotional experience.

This woman knows that she will trust and depend on her dog to keep her safe while she is walking around, for many years to come.
