For students, computers are important tools that allow them to express themselves and communicate with others outside of school. Students at Komei have a wide range of other interests, and there are some who are quite accomplished in such areas as sports and the arts. Computers in Class
Of the elective courses offered to high school students, computer science is very popular among the
kids of group five. The computer classroom is equipped with 12 personal computers, and students can be
found there even after classes, creating illustrations or just hanging out together. This room is a place
where students can communicate with each other and express themselves to the rest of the world.

As she uses a tablet to create an illustration, Sachie Shima comments, "This is my favorite place in
the whole school." In today's class, the task is to create a 2003 calendar, and the seven students are
each at work on their own computer. For some of the students, typing on a keyboard is difficult, so the
computers have been specially outfitted to enable students to work via tablets, joysticks, and voice command.
And students like Yukari Kaneko, who has difficulty commuting to school and usually studies at home, participate
in classes via next-generation mobile phones, which can serve as videophones.

This class offers training in preparation for a national computer examination, and its vision is expanding
to include consideration of what students will do in society after graduating.
