Canton (or Guangzhou) |
Guangzhou is a city of many names. Split in half by the Pearl River, this capital of southeast China's Guangdong Province used to be known as Canton. It's called the "flower city," and "rice-ear city," because it has ever-green scenery and flowers blooming all the year round. Guangzhou has more tea-houses and restaurants than any other city in China. Guangzhou is south China's main seaport, with rail and hovercraft connections to nearby Hong Kong. About 6.7 million people live in the city, which was started about 2800 years ago. The climate of Guangzhou is sub-tropical. The average year-round temperature is 22C. August is the hottest month, with an average temperature of 28C. January is the coldest month, with an average of 13C. The city is famous for its arts and crafts, namely the Guang Dong embroidery, ivory-carving and ceramics. |
Not all of Guangzhou is old - a lot of the buildings are very new. |
