Tianenman Square

Tianenman Square is a huge square in the centre of Beijing. Beside the square is the entry to the Forbidden Palace.

The Forbidden Palace is where in the olden days, the Emperor of China lived. In those days, ordinary people were seldom allowed to go inside. Today it is like a large museum, and you can walk around and see what it is like.

In those days, the Emperor might have had many wives, and lots and lots of children. The women usually had their feet bound tightly with bandages when they were children, so that their feet stayed very tiny. This was thought to make them more beautiful, but it meant that their feet were very painful, and they could not walk very much at all.
