The helmsman concentrates on driving the boat as fast as possible.
He takes input from the tactician, navigator and the trimmers, and then decides what to do.
Often there are two people who share this job, with one being the expert who handles the boat during the pre-start, and then the other who steers the boat during the race itself.
During the pre-start (five minutes before gun) the helmsman is crucial in the jockeying for position to secure the best possible position for crossing the line. This is called winning the start.
