At the end of each round of the cup, only the highest scoring teams continue, so by the end of the final round, only one boat is left. This boat wins the Louis Vuitton Cup, and goes on to challenge Team New Zealand for the America's Cup. In this challenge, the Prada syndicate won, beating America One by only one race. The Italians won 5 races, and the Americans won 4.

Sometimes several different
syndicates want the chance to defend the cup, and they race each
other to see which one will have the right to defend the cup. Sir
Peter Blake decided that, because New Zealand is such a small
country, it would be better if only one syndicate defended the cup,
and everyone helped that one syndicate to win. (Some New Zealanders
are working for other syndicates though.)
