Steam Engines

Steam engines have to burn a lot of coal to heat up the water in the boiler and make steam.

The steam is used to make pistons go up and down, and to make the wheels go round.

The problem with the smoke that comes out the funnel is that it also has cinders in it. These are tiny bits of burning coal, and if they fall on anything dry, they set it on fire.

How do you think people in those days tried to prevent trains from leaving lots of fires behind them as they chugged along?
