Pirate ships used to fly ordinary flags at times, so that they could sneak up on other boats. But when they decided to attack, they would fly the Jolly Roger, which told the other boat that they were about to be boarded by pirates.

Each captain had his own version of the flag. Here are some of the most famous ones.
