In this Activity you
will
- Practice your intranet navigation
skills
- Learn some basic facts about
volcanoes in New Zealand and the world
- Learn where to find books in the
library about volcanoes
Go to the
Library
- Start in the Reference section
- Look up volcanoes in 2 or 3
different encyclopedias, and just read what they
say
- Go to the library catalogue
computer, and type in volcano
- Find the dewey number where
most of these books are located
- Look at the books available, to
see if any of them would be useful to you.
- Go back and sit down with your
team, and dot jot anything you remember, without any
books
- What vocabulary do you
need?

- Name the three different sorts
of volcano
- Which is the more rounded, less
steep kind?
- Click on "Parts of a Volcano". Dot
jot the vocabulary you need to learn.
- What is a crater and where is
it located
- Look at the two diagrams and
discuss which is best, and why.
- Go back to "What happens in
eruptions"
- What has more effect on how
explosive an eruption is - water, or
silica?
Go on the intranet, to
New
Zealand Volcanoes
- Click "Auckland Volcanic Field".
- What does it tell you about new
volcanoes in Auckland?
- Click on "A small Rotorua
eruption". Read it through.
- What sort of damage did it
do?
- What dangers would there be for
people living nearby?
- Click on "What if Auckland
erupted?"
- What things happened, in what
order? Think about when you would want to be making
your news broadcast - before the eruption, during the
eruption, or the day after. You decide!
That's all. Now you know a few
things about volcanic eruptions, and you are ready to start
your specific research for your task.
