When water is very cold (below 0º Celsius) it freezes, and becomes ice. Ice takes up more space than water. Once ice starts to get warmer than 0ºC, it melts, and turns back into water.

Only very cold areas, like the Arctic and Antarctic, have ice all year round. These icebergs are breaking up and melting as they float out to sea.
