Boats cannot sail
directly into the wind so to reach the windward mark they
must sail a zig-zag course at an angle to it, known as
tacking or beating. The aim of the game is
to stay between the mark and your opponent, employing your
tactical cunning and sailing knowledge to maximise speed.
The afterguard -
skipper, tactician, helmsman and navigator - will decide
where and when to tack depending on wind, tide and position
on the course relative to the opposition.
