Rounding the top mark
calls for a change of direction, from sailing into the wind
to running before it.
The crew will hoist the
huge billowing spinnaker in place of the headsail to harness
the following wind and increase speed.
Timing of the hoist is
crucial and the crews will be aiming to have their "kite"
flying within two boat lengths of the mark.
But attention must also
be paid to the opposition as mark-roundings can be heated,
close-quarter battles, where confidence and an intimate
understanding of the rules are essential.
